The Authentic Assistant

It doesn’t matter what organisational system you are currently using, the important question to ask yourself is, is this method working for me?

Don’t be afraid to change the organisation system you are currently using if you find it is not working for you

Instead of feeling frustrated and annoyed at not being able to find something in your home, or forgetting to make the appointment, stop and take a long slow deep breath in and slowly out again.

It will be alright, everything will be ok.

Fed up with tasks not being done or overlooked. Well this probably means that the organisational system you have in place is just not working and that is ok.

There are so many different ways of organising things and just because it works for other people does not mean it works for you.

Maybe your family size is different. You have more kids or fewer kids, older or younger ones or no kids. You might have pets. Maybe you have other family members living with you or you are sharing your home with housemates. It may even be that you are just a different person. There is nothing right or wrong about that. Your way of doing things is just not the same and that is good.

The only challenge you have is changing the routine a bit

Instead of panicking about it and freaking out, look at it as a positive thing. Change can be exactly what you need.

There are so many options out there why not try out something new.

Keep losing track of where your keys are?

Can you have a bowl near the door and keep your keys, ID card and wallet there to grab on your way out or put when you come in the door?

Or set up a safe spot to catch them all in one place and always put them there. Not in plain sight but you and other family members know where it is.

Paperwork organisation piling up?

Collect all the bills you have to pay or forms you have to read and fill in to one section.

If it doesn’t work in the kitchen then what kind of office set up do you have?

It could be a folder or binder to store the paperwork that you have ready to go and you just sit at the kitchen or dining room table and work through them.

Think about where you feel the most comfortable doing the admin work and make that your focus. Have everything you need right there to complete the task in one sitting. This could be a calculator, cheque book, latest bank statement etc. Need to fill out forms, then collect the information you need to fill it in.

Allocate time in the week to do your admin work

This depends on your hours at work or duties at home. Maybe you work best in the late evening when all others are in bed and the place is quiet. No interruptions. Or even early in the morning before the house wakes up. It could be the best way to start the day knowing you invested the 10-30 minutes and did the admin work and it is all ready to go. That boost of confidence could be a positive way to start the day.

The beauty is you get to pick the time that suits you best .

Try it out for a week or two and see if it works and if it doesn’t then change it again. It is not set in stone.

Why does an organisational method work?

It works because it makes sense to you and you do it without thinking about it. The method you are using is not a chore it is a habit and one that is completed without a negative thought. It is logical and the method works for you.

Writing to do lists does work for some people and they love crossing off the things that have been done. Why not have some fun and write a not to do list.

Things that you have already done or don’t need doing a fun tasks done list.

The boost you get knowing that there are so many things that have been completed.

Don’t get stuck in a rut and feel frustrated at not getting anywhere. Wondering why this method of organising is not helping you as it does other people.

Look at it in a positive way and think it is time for a change.

Inspirational quotes to make you think

It is a process of elimination.

Eliminate the things that are not working for you and figure out what does. You won’t know if they work or not unless you try them for yourself.

Work expands to fill time.

This is so true. If you think you have the afternoon to do a task you will find yourself using that whole time to do the job. The question is are you procrastinating or just rebelling against how you feel you should be doing it? Is there another method you could use?

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein

When something does not work don’t keep doing it and hoping the 17th time it will work out. Stop and think maybe if I change even slightly how I do it, it is possible or simplifies the whole process. It may introduce some fun into the whole thing.

It's time for a change quotes

“The changes we dread the most may contain our salvation.” – Barbara Kingsolver

Sometimes we fear or dread a change as it means moving out of our comfort zone. What if that change is the breath of fresh air you need right now to inspire and motivate you to a new beginning.

“If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” – Maya Angelou

Of course there are so many situations we could be in where we cannot change something that we don’t like. Then why not change your attitude towards it?

Cleaning the house is not a fun task for everyone. Why not call it home aerobics. It is a work out if you do it properly. Being productive with exercise and the end result is a clean home.

“To improve is to change, to be perfect is to change often.”

Things change in life and nothing stays the same. The simple thing of everyone ageing. Nobody can stop time. What you could do a few years ago you may not be able to do anymore. If you like gardening and growing your own fruit and vegetables but cannot bend down anymore, how about raised beds to allow you to enjoy your hobby without having to bend down.

“If what you’re doing is not working, change it.” – Tony Robbins

Don’t feel bogged down in the mundane everyday routines that we all fall into.

If something feels wrong or overwhelming ask yourself “ is this working for me?” If you find yourself saying “no” then it is up to you to figure if you do want to change it.

Change the organisational system if it is not working for you

“Implement whatever organisational system works best for you, but then be sure to review your to-do list at least once a week. Cheryl Barker

Think about what you are currently putting up with and why?

What parts of your life seem to make sense and what organisational systems do you have in place for that and how they positively work for you. At the same time acknowledge the systems or methods that do not work for you.

Simplify things and change or update the ones that don’t. Try out something new and check again in a week if it has made a difference or not.

They are not set in stone so you can shuffle things up again until you find the one that suits your style.
