Want to build a new habit and don’t know where to start and the thought of even trying has been putting you off?
Well the best way to start a new habit is by finding a very small change you want to introduce into your life and simplify it.
“Make it so easy you can’t say no.” – Leo Babauta
Don’t worry about the big things just now, that is the end goal to be achieved. Right now you are simplifying things.
There is possibly so much research out there stating just how easy it is or how others have achieved it. We are not even thinking about anyone else and what they have done. This is just about here and now and your life. Make it easy!
Do you find your mornings so stressful you seem frazzled before you leave your front door? How about setting the alarm 5 minutes earlier. Could that give you a boost in motivation in the morning. If you try that for a week does it work? Could you set the alarm 5 minutes earlier again or even get to bed a little earlier.
Making the first step a simple and basic one means starting that momentum was easy and the feeling of accomplishment is empowering.
“Once you break a habit into its components, you can fiddle with the gears.” – Charles Duhigg
This sounds hard at first but it does make sense. If a new habit seems overwhelming then how about breaking it down into smaller parts.
Have you been thinking about increasing your water intake during the day and don’t know where to start? Buying the new expensive water bottle does not mean you are drinking more, it means you have spent money thinking about it.
How about starting off every morning drinking a small glass of water and seeing how you feel. Build your new habit slowly. Your body becomes used to hydrating first thing that you can slowly increase the size of the glass and soon realise you are doing it without even thinking about it. You have already won and have not even had breakfast yet.
There are so many examples of breaking things down in your everyday tasks and implementing them in your daily routines could make your overall life easier and enjoyable.
“Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” – Jim Rohn
Don’t let the negative thoughts take over and feel defeated before you even begin. By starting small and with easy to reach steps you have begun to motivate yourself and started the momentum of moving forward. That push is the driving force to keep you going and once the habit is formed it becomes second nature.
“The more you focus, the more that focus becomes a habit.” – Charles Duhigg
Focusing on the task is not a bad thing, as that is only imprinting on your brain that you want to do it, you want to walk more or eat healthier, right now you need to think about it until it becomes normal to you.
Before long you will be walking more or spending time with family and friends, eating healthier is part of your normal meal planning and shopping. You no longer have to focus on it; it has become the habit.
“You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret of your success is found in your daily routine.” – John C. Maxwell
It may seem impossible to achieve that simple, successful or healthy life and if you keep going as you are right now it may not be. However by changing the simple tasks you are doing every day you never know just how much you can accomplish.
Your daily routine is exactly that, your daily routine not anyone else’s and it is therefore up to you to improve or adapt it to the life you want to lead.
“If your habits don’t line up with your dream, then you need to either change your habits or change your dream.” – John Maxwell
